What exactly is trauma?

TRAUMA

noun

/ˈtrɔ·mə,ˈtraʊ.mə/

Trauma is an emotional response to an event or series of events that are deeply distressing or disturbing to an individual. This can range from one-time incidents, such as accidents, natural disasters, or violent attacks, to ongoing stressors, such as chronic illness, emotional abuse, or living in a conflict zone.

Trauma is not defined solely by the event itself but by the individual's experience of it. Two people can undergo the same event, yet their psychological and emotional responses may differ significantly. Trauma can disrupt the individual's sense of safety, leading to feelings of helplessness and a diminished sense of self and can affect one's ability to cope with and enjoy day-to-day life.

The impact of trauma can be immediate or delayed, with symptoms surfacing long after the traumatic event has passed, where the effects of trauma become deeply integrated into an individual's identity and way of interacting with the world.

Trauma can deeply affect our bodies, minds, and emotions, often in ways we might not fully understand, and can have profound long-term implications for individuals, including:

  • Mental Health Challenges

  • Chronic Illness

  • Physical Health Issues

  • Emotional Regulation Difficulties

  • Relationship Challenges

  • Substance Use & Abuse

  • Impaired Sense of Self

Trauma can stem from a wide range of experiences, including:

Physical Trauma

Physical trauma results from bodily harm or injury, such as accidents, assaults, or medical procedures. The physical pain and recovery process can also lead to emotional distress.

Emotional Trauma

Emotional trauma arises from experiences that leave a person feeling overwhelmed, helpless or threatened. This can include abuse, neglect, loss, or witnessing violence.

THE

INVISIBLE

TRAUMA BACKPACK

FEELS HEAVY

We all carry an invisible "backpack" filled with our past experiences, including traumas. This backpack can feel heavy and affect how we navigate life's challenges. By understanding the impact of trauma, we can learn to unpack it and develop resilience.

The Statistics

There's been a 25% global increase in depression and anxiety since 2020

These statistics are a wake-up call for urgent action.

These statistics are a

wake-up call for urgent action.

If you're reading in disbelief and shock, you're not alone!

These facts SHOULD leave us outraged:

Outraged that one in seven 10-19-year-olds experience a mental disorder.

Outraged that public sector organisations such as the police and health care practitioners do not receive compulsory training on trauma informed awareness and practice.

Outraged that 12 billion working days are lost every year to depression and anxiety alone.

These alarming statistics reveal a disturbing truth:

A mental health crisis is unfolding before our eyes.

An avoidable crisis, no less. But our outrage is only useful if it spurs us into ACTION.

So, the question is, what are we going to DO about it?

It's time for a new approach.

One that addresses the heart of the issue and fosters a world where mental wellbeing is prioritised.

Integrating trauma informed practices with positive psychology can help create safer, healthier spaces globally.

Early support, education and intervention are crucial.
